Gyeonggi Ballet Festa — Six of Korea’s Leading Independent Ballet Companies, One Per Night

As someone who does ballet as a hobby, I can’t let this kind of programme go past.

Gyeonggi Ballet Festa, at the Gyeonggi Arts Center. I’ve already booked the Wednesday.

What it is

Organised by the Ballet STP Cooperative, this festival brings together six of Korea’s leading independent ballet companies — which is a genuinely rare thing to see in one place.

The companies

  • Seoul Ballet Theatre
  • SEO Ballet
  • Jung Pal-il Ballet Creative
  • Dance Theatre Shalom
  • Yunbyul Ballet Company
  • Wise Ballet Theatre

The format

Each company gets its own night. Dancers with distinct characters and styles perform work built around their own strengths, spread across the run.

Why the one-company-per-night format is good

This is the part worth understanding if you’re planning to go.

With a mixed gala, you take what you’re given. Here, you choose the company.

Independent companies in Korea differ enormously — some are essentially neoclassical, some are much closer to contemporary dance, some build narrative work. Reading the lineup and picking the night that matches your taste is the whole advantage.

If you don’t know any of them yet, that’s an argument for going twice.

Why independent companies matter

National and large-scale companies do the canon, and they do it magnificently.

Independent companies are where new work happens. Choreographers with something to prove, smaller casts, ideas that wouldn’t survive a committee. If you want to know where Korean ballet is going rather than where it’s been, this is the room.

They also tend to be considerably cheaper than a national company ticket, which for someone building a habit of going regularly matters.

Practical notes

Venue: Gyeonggi Arts Center — just outside Seoul, in Suwon. Easily reachable from the city.

Booking: through the Gyeonggi Arts Center site.

Seating: these are smaller-scale works in a mid-sized house. Sit close enough to see faces.

For a ballet fan, this lineup is not one to miss. And if you’ve only ever seen the big companies, an evening with an independent one will recalibrate what you think ballet in Korea is.
